Norfoam A

Insulating Fire Bricks


Norfoam A has high(er) purity level than most other insulating type products – e.g. fiber board and will therefore be less reactive with aggressive atmospheres such as hydrogen, chlorine, or glass vapors – ultimately allowing the end user to operate under more aggressive conditions or operate longer under current conditions which corrode the existing lining.
Refractoriness
Norfoam A has a higher temperature use limit as compared to most other insulating materials – this higher "refractoriness" will enable the operator to work at higher temperature levels than currently enabled with existing materials - ultimately higher temperature operation will enable the benefits of increased process yields via efficiency gains – additionally there is the potential for lower process emissions when operating at higher temperature.
Low Post Shrinkage
Norfoam A exhibits extremely low levels of post shrinkage upon exposure to operating temperatures as compared to fibrous materials which are susceptible to crystallization and ensuing shrinkage. Excessive post shrinkage of insulating linings can cause operational issues such as hot spots on the wall of the kiln creating inefficient operation and potentially leading to vessel damage.
Fiber Free
Norfoam A is composed of high purity alumina particles and contains no fibrous material – there are substantially lower HSE concerns during the machining, installation, use and disposal of Norfoam. Norfoam A exhibits higher structural integrity than fibrous materials after repeated thermal cycling (e.g. on kiln door) and there is no unwanted fiber liberation that can affect the operator or contaminate the product within the kiln.
Machine able
Due to its structure Norfoam can be machined easily and quickly as compared to IFBs or fibers - resulting in faster installation time.
Size
Norfoam A can be made into large shapes as compared to IFBs (beyond the current "standard shapes" Norfoam sheets could be extracted out from the 12x24" slab – additionally larger sizes are likely possible with larger molds – maximum size yet to be determined)
Cost competitive
As compared to certain grades of high alumina fiber board Norfoam is lower in price.
Light Weight
Norfoam A is a light weight material that will require less supporting infrastructure compared to an IFB lining, thereby, resulting in lower thermomechanical stresses overall.
Lower thermal conductivity (as compared to IFBs)
Norfoam A has lower Kth as compared to IFBs.
Scalable
Nor foam A can be added onto pre-existing constructions –i.e. material can be glued on to existing refractory via a mortar or glue – it does not require anchors/pins.
Regulatory:
More stringent fiber regulations would help but is not mandatory
Emissions regulations require higher operating temperatures would promote the need for a material like Norfoam A that has higher duty level
Economic:
Fuel prices continue to rise thereby mandating higher thermal efficiencies in kilns.
