Reducing emission points with the INFUSER CLIMATIC® system
A challenge to the foundry industry: revision of the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft)


The draft version of the revised technical instructions on air quality control is currently being drawn up by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The planned changes concern general limit values and particular specifications for certain types of plant. The aim is to publish a new TA Luft by mid-2017.


The CLIMATIC system by INFUSER purifies air in foundries using a patented method that reduces contamination by close to 100%. For example, CLIMATIC systems can be deployed in foundries to extract the amines, phenols, formaldehyde and BTEX occurring during core making and in moulding systems.


The CLIMATIC air purification technology devised by the University of Copenhagen, Den-mark, together with INFUSER, accelerates the natural cleaning process of the earth's at¬mos-phere by a hundred thousand times in a compact reactor. The atmospheric-photo¬¬chemi¬cal process requires considerably less energy than conventional methods, as it works on the basis of natural chemical reactions.


CLIMATIC and cold box system from Hüttenes-Albertus employed together
A test is currently being carried out on a core-drying furnace in a large German foundry, the aim of which is to attain a significant reduction in emissions of amines and solvents. The CLIMATIC has been installed in the plant together with the similarly patented Cold Box System by Hüttenes-Albertus. "The combination of the CLIMATIC and our Cold Box System opens up whole new and more environmentally friendly application possibilities in the foundry industry," notes Timm Ziehm, product manager of Hüttenes-Albertus, "because the advantages of diminished BTEX emissions resulting from the tetra¬ethyl¬ silicate-based Cold Box System can also be combined in future with thermal post-combustion." This was until now only possible to a certain extent with the transformation of tetraethyl silicate into amor-phous silicon dioxide at high temperature and with an associated drop in performance.


Successfully tested in the core drying furnace
The test, which runs from April to June, is being evaluated by experts from the Uni¬versi¬ty of Wup¬per¬tal, Germany. The results obtained so far surpass the expectations of all those in¬vol-ved. The University of Wuppertal has so far established that the CLIMATIC system cleans the exhaust air completely of amines and other substances. The reaction times of the amines, tetra¬ethyl¬¬ silicate and aromatic hydrocarbons toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene in the purification process is so short that even a relatively small system can be employed. The reaction times of benzene are a little longer, so it makes sense in this case to employ a some-what larger CLIMATIC system. Following the test on the core-drying furnace, a further long-term test is to be performed on a mould plant.


Eco-efficient and cost-effective air purification
Besides powerful and environmentally friendly purification, industrial operations benefit above all from economic benefits compared to conventional systems. In addition to cost benefits in terms of investment, it also reduces ongoing energy and operating costs. It is also more environmentally friendly, as considerably less waste is produced. The CLIMATIC system can be installed as an upstream solution in an existing system or as a standalone unit. The running costs of the overall air filter system in foundries, including existing scrubbers or active carbon filters, can be reduced by up to 70% when a CLIMATIC system is connected upstream.
