Lisi Automotive, world leader in the manufacture of fastening components and assembly systems for the automotive industry, is pleased to announce the signing of a strategic partnership with ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company. This collaboration aims to push the boundaries of sustainability and efficiency in the automotive industry by developing and integrating XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel into manufacturing processes.
ArcelorMittal has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 35 percent in Europe by 2030. Its XCarb® initiative is designed to bring together ArcelorMittal’s products and steel-making activities with a view to delivering carbon-neutral steel. This initiative is perfectly aligned with Lisi Automotive’s vision of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Together, the two companies will strive to reduce the automotive industry’s carbon footprint while improving product quality and performance.
Through this partnership, Lisi Automotive and ArcelorMittal plan to forge ahead with developing innovative components and assembly systems using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel products, which will ultimately significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with vehicle manufacturing.
Today, ArcelorMittal can manufacture wire rods with less than 700 kilograms of CO₂ per tonne of steel at its plants in Hamburg and Warsaw, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 70 percent compared with traditional production methods based on the blast furnace method. With the innovative DRI process of steel-making, which is a key part of ArcelorMittal’s decarbonisation strategy, the carbon footprint of their products will be reduced even further.
XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is designed to come with low carbon emissions while being strong and fully compatible with the automotive industry’s high standards for safety and performance.
For Lisi Automotive, this partnership is in line with the company’s objective of reducing CO₂ emissions by 30 percent (for scope 1, 2 and 3a) by 2030. Indeed, the purchasing of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel will represent a reduction of up to 45 percent of Lisi Automotive’s carbon emissions. These are linked to raw material purchasing at ArcelorMittal and a gross reduction of up to 10,000 tonnes of CO₂e (the equivalent of the emissions released in 10,000 Paris-to-New York journeys for one passenger).
Francois Liotard, CEO of Lisi Automotive, comments: “This partnership represents a new step for the automotive industry, where durability and performance go hand in hand. Together with ArcelorMittal, we are determined to push the boundaries of innovation to create solutions that will benefit the planet and future generations.”
Tapas Rajderkar, CMO for long products at ArcelorMittal Europe, says: “ArcelorMittal is at the forefront of developing low-carbon steel products. We aim to further reduce CO₂ emissions to achieve carbon neutrality and support our customers in reaching their goals. This is why we are delighted to be now getting started on our collaboration and partnership with Lisi Automotive. This is another important step on the path to a green industrial future.”
