In August 2023, Primetals Technologies received an order from China Steel Corporation (CSC) to carry out a study for decarbonisation. The focus of this study is on reducing the carbon emissions at the Kaohsiung site in Taiwan.
Martin Smith, Business Development Director, Asia Iron & Steelmaking at Primetals Technologies, says:
“We are very happy to support CSC in this initiative, which is of critical importance for the long-term plans of the company.”
The site in question is the largest plant in Taiwan and produces approximately 10 million tonnes of raw steel every year.
The declared goal is to achieve carbon neutrality until the year 2050. Primetals Technologies will leverage their expertise to generate a comprehensive study and deliver a detailed report to CSC including recommendations for the decarbonisation strategy. This report will among other things include possible improvements for the operational business concerning the BF/BOF route.
CSC has pledged decarbonisation and is actively working on solutions to reduce carbon emissions by 25 percent until 2030, and achieve carbon neutrality until 2050. Within the scope of these efforts, CSC has chosen to partner with Primetals Technologies.
Primetals Technologies is recognised world-wide as a reliable partner when it comes to meeting complex challenges together. The company is a pioneer in innovations for the environment within the metal industry and is engaged in development of green technologies for the global steel industry.
China Steel Corporation, headquartered in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, was founded in December 1971. The company’s plant in Kaohsiung has four blast furnaces with a daily production capacity of approximately 24,000 tonnes of raw iron in total. Among the chief products of CSC are metal sheets, steel bars, wire rod, hot- and cold-milled coils, zinc-galvanised coils, electrical steel coils and hot-galvanised coils.
CSC delivers high quality steel products both to the domestic as well as to the international market. Although the company has a significant influence far beyond the borders of Taiwan and mainly exports to South East Asia, Europe and Japan, in Taiwan itself it has an impressive market share of over 50 percent.
