EMW Stahl Service GmbH and ArcelorMittal are taking joint steps toward decarbonization. Starting this year, ArcelorMittal will supply low-emission steel as well as CO2 saving certificates to the steel service center based in Neunkirchen, Siegerland. EMW has committed itself to achieving climate neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030. Across Europe, ArcelorMittal is aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 35 percent by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutral production worldwide by 2050.
Partnership for Low-Emission Steel
ArcelorMittal Commercial Steel Germany supplies EMW with low-carbon XCarb® steel. XCarb® produces steels using scrap (70 percent) and renewable electricity (100 percent). The reduced carbon footprint is attested by an official Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Per ton, CO2 emissions amount to 797 kg, which makes up only about one third of the emissions of steel produced in a conventional blast furnace (2.57 t CO2 per t steel).
ArcelorMittal will provide EMW with both technical support and the requested quantities of XCarb® steel. EMW will in turn pass on the steel, that is low in CO2 as a result of its production, to its customers and end users.
EMW Managing Director Michael Mockenhaupt says: "Our own ambitious goal is climate neutrality by 2030, and we have already launched numerous projects and activities in our organization to achieve this. Equally important in this context, however, are the agreements with our long-standing partners such as ArcelorMittal to purchase low-CO2 steels in order to be able to map the full scope."
In addition to the steel supplied, EMW will continue to purchase steel with XCarb® Green Steel certificates from ArcelorMittal. This way, the company will verifiably document the CO2 reduction, as the CO2 reduction in these certificates amounts to 2.11 tons of CO2 per ton of steel. An independent account will be used to mass balance and independently verify the CO2 savings.

EMW is a steel service center and part of the Schaefer Group, which operates worldwide. It supplies the steel processing industry with coils, slit strips, blanks and circular blanks. The company from the Siegerland region already offers a wide range of low-CO2 steels. Among other things, EMW purchases Magnelis® flat steels from ArcelorMittal for its customers in the processing industry. These steels are coated from both sides, which makes them particularly resistant to corrosion and very versatile.
