Fritz Winter eco solutions is a comprehensive initiative by Fritz Winter Eisengießerei GmbH & Co. KG, dedicated to promoting sustainable production methods and environmentally friendly products in the foundry industry. The initiative aims to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions and resource consumption in the sector. Key strategies include energy-efficient production, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and targeted emissions control.
With its eco solutions, Fritz Winter follows a holistic sustainability approach, balancing environmental responsibility with economic viability, ensuring long-term, sustainable progress.
To bring this vision to life, the company has launched its most ambitious investment program to date, securing a syndicated loan of approximately €300 million. This funding supports the company’s strategic focus on environmentally sustainable solutions in iron casting.
At the heart of Fritz Winter’s strategy are innovative environmental solutions that set new benchmarks for ecological sustainability in the foundry industry. The key initiatives include:
- ecoCasting
- ecoMelting
- ecoCoating
Each initiative plays a critical role in minimizing environmental impact.
Shaping the Future Instead of Reacting to Challenges
Fritz Winter relies on innovation to achieve competitive advantages beyond energy and labor costs—factors where Germany faces global competition. Instead, the company focuses on energy efficiency, recycling, and technical excellence.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fritz Winter conducted a comprehensive review of its industrial strategy, moving beyond the conventional “everything is possible” mindset toward self-driven innovation.
A prime example of this approach is the ecoCasting process, introduced in 2014. This method replaces conventional sand casting for automotive and light commercial vehicle engines with fully integrated core packages and is set to expand to truck engine housings. By utilizing advanced casting frames, this process enables:
- Thinner-walled cast components
- Function integration
- Weight reduction
- Significant reduction of water and sand consumption
- Complete sand recycling
A new ecoCasting facility is set to launch in 2025.
Decarbonization and Climate Neutrality by 2045 – Investing in Two New Electric Induction Furnaces
With a vision to become the world’s leading foundry, Fritz Winter prioritizes holistic, long-term solutions over short-term fixes. Since 2013, the company has complied with emission trading system regulations, laying the foundation for its comprehensive decarbonization strategies.
A key focus is waste heat recovery, ensuring that thermal energy needs in production halls are met efficiently, despite the continuous heat generation from melting processes. To develop an optimal melting concept, Fritz Winter launched a “concept competition”, inviting experts to propose innovative solutions.
The winning concept resulted in the installation of two state-of-the-art electric induction furnaces with a combined melting capacity of 30 tons. These furnaces are now operational in the facility known as "the Cathedral." This investment achieves:
- CO₂ emissions reduction by 43,000 tons
- Decreased dependence on fossil fuels like coke
- Sustainable sourcing of recycled materials in response to evolving raw material dynamics in steel production
Commitment, Passion for Progress, and Excellence
Driven by a strong sense of responsibility towards future generations, Fritz Winter pushes for sustainable transformation with the full support of its workforce.
Discussions with Thomas von Reth, Markus Semmler, and Christoph Helfenbein highlight how deeply rooted this commitment is in the company’s culture, shaping both operations and partnerships with like-minded innovators dedicated to progress and excellence.
