SMS group: Green hydrogen for the Brazilian steel industry

The energy supplier Eletrobras and SMS group have agreed to collaborate on the production of green hydrogen. The aim is to decarbonize industrial processes in the Brazilian steel industry.

Eletrobras, the leading energy supplier in Latin America, and SMS subsidiary Paul Wurth have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on the production and use of green hydrogen (H2) in industrial processes in Brazil. The 10 MW plant for green H2 and O2 production will be built near a steel mill. Once completed, the plant will have 37 times the capacity of Eletrobras' existing development and demonstration platform for green hydrogen technology at the Itumbiara hydroelectric power plant in Brazil.
The plant will initially replace natural gas in industrial processes. On a larger scale, hydrogen could eventually become an alternative to the various fossil fuels used today.
