The number of people on short-time working has risen again for the first time since January. According to estimates by the ifo Institute, it increased from 76,000 to 187,000 from August to November. The figures rose primarily in industry, where the number of employees on short time working grew from 59,000 to 151,000. The data comes from an ifo survey and figures from the German Federal Employment Agency.
"In particular, the energy-intensive industries and the automotive industry are again increasingly resorting to short-time work. This is in line with the recent weakening of production in these industries," said Sebastian Link, a researcher at the Ifo Institute.
The number rose from 14,100 to 33,400 people in the automotive industry and from 7,400 to 21,200 in the chemical sector.
"Compared to the last Corona winters, however, the level of short-time work is still very low," Link adds.
The total number of short-time workers in November was 750,000.
