The Innio Group has received the first "H2-Ready" certificate from Tüv Süd for its concept of an engine power plant powered by 100% hydrogen. The award was given to the 4 and 6 series of the Jenbacher hydrogen product line together with the associated plant concept.
The first stage of certification attests to the "H2 readiness" of Innio's plant concept based on Jenbacher's Series 4 and 6 product lines, making the manufacturer the first in the world to receive this concept certificate, according to the company.
The awarded concept enables both the conversion of existing power plants to hydrogen and the planning of new hydrogen-capable plants.
The Austrian engine manufacturer's plants are designed to operate with gas-hydrogen mixtures. With its "Ready for H2" technology, Innio also offers engines in the 1-MW class that can be operated with 100% hydrogen, in addition to 60-Hz engines. From 2025 the entire product portfolio is to be designed for operation exclusively with hydrogen.
Tüv Süd certification
The certification of an "H2-Ready" engine power plant by Tüv Süd consists of three stages with corresponding certificates:
- During the tender phase, a Concept Certificate is issued for the conceptual design including all framework conditions.
- In the implementation phase of a project, a Project Certificate is then issued based on the final plant design and its specifications.
- And finally, a Transition Certificate evaluates the conversion of an existing engine power plant to hydrogen operation. This third stage also includes a review of the retrofit measures and their impact on safety and performance.
The certification offered by Tüv Süd can be applied to a wide range of engine power plants. In addition, Tüv Süd also tests and certifies the H2 compatibility of materials.
"H2-Ready" also defines roadmap for conversion
According to Tüv, input from both the Innio Group and other industry players was taken into account when developing the guidelines for the certification process. The certification covers a complete engine power plant with all relevant subsystems.
It does not refer exclusively to new "H2-Ready" engine power plants, but also defines a roadmap for the conversion of existing plants - from successive blending to pure hydrogen operation. According to Tüv, certification offers municipalities and companies a high level of investment security, among other things.
