Thomas Bünger will succeed Reiner Blaschek as CEO of ArcelorMittal’s Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt plants on 1 February 2024. He will be responsible for the Germany cluster at ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. This was decided at the company’s supervisory board meetings in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt in early December 2023.
Reiner Blaschek will take over the role of chairman of the management board of ArcelorMittal Germany Holding at a later date. Blaschek will be appointed CEO for the company’s entire European flat steel business, also on 1 February, as announced by the organisation in October.
Bünger said:
“This new role at ArcelorMittal at the Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt locations comes at an eventful time. Decarbonisation and digital transformation of steel production are major and important factors that will shape the future here. I look forward to working with my colleagues at the plants to take on the tasks ahead and I am confident that we will succeed together.”
The senior executive was most recently the CEO of London-based tin mining development company First Tin. Prior to this, he held several important positions at Aurubis in Hamburg, where his management board brief included responsibility for operations and technology. At the start of his career in 1996, Bünger worked in research and development at Freiberger Compound Materials in Germany.
He studied at the Mining Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, and at the Institute for Non-Ferrous Metallurgy and High-Purity Materials at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, where he also later completed a doctorate in non-ferrous metallurgy alongside his continuing work commitments.
