Thyssenkrupp Uhde has joined a consortium developing a floating plant for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia on an industrial scale. The basis is the concept of a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.
The consortium called "Offset" is led by the Dutch project developer SwitcH2. The companies BW Offshore Norway AS (BWO), Marin, TU Delft and Strohm are on board as partners.
In April 2023, the project group received a €3 million grant from the Dutch government. The floating plant for the production and storage of hydrogen "and/or ammonia" is to be connected to a neighbouring wind farm by 2027.
Thyssenkrupp Uhde says it has already carried out a technical concept study for the plant based on its uhde® ammonia synthesis technology.
FPSO-based ammonia production
The Dortmund-based group, part of Krupp since 1996, describes the cooperation between the project group and Thyssenkrupp Uhde as a "milestone on the way to a sustainable and environmentally friendly industry". In a press release on 3 August, it states that the new FPSO ammonia plant is modular in design and will "shape the future of clean offshore ammonia production". No further details are available yet.
In March, SwitcH2 had reported that it had received approval in principle for the planning of an FPSO plant for the production of offshore ammonia from renewable energies. As part of the Approval in Principle process, the Norwegian BWO has since developed the FSPO's topside design, hull and mooring system.
