X-Pact® system from the SMS group for hot strip mill of ArcelorMittal in Brazil

The SMS group has successfully modernized the existing automation system of the hot strip mill at ArcelorMittal Tubarão, Brazil. The project for the new automation of the roughing train and edger, which had been supplied 20 years earlier by a third-party supplier, required intensive preparations as well as close cooperation between the parties involved. The modernization could be carried out during the regular annual shutdown without additional downtime. 

Modern technology and software  

With the X-Pact® embedded controllers and a real-time EtherCAT I/O system, the automation system was raised to a new technological level. SMS group's scope of services included a state-of-the-art X-Pact® electrical and automation technology that ensures "Digital Readiness" ̶ an essential prerequisite to prepare production units and automation technology for digitalization with minimum effort. After commissioning, the production team was supported for a while by SMS group technology experts via the X-Pact® service portal. 

Modernization without additional downtime 

The modernization was scheduled to coincide with ArcelorMittal Tubarão's annual shutdown. The first slab was successfully produced on time after an eleven-day plant shutdown. Despite considerable problems within the supply chain in the wake of the Corona pandemic, the project team managed to complete the project on time. The trusting relationship in the cooperation between the teams of ArcelorMittal Tubarão, SMS group Brazil and SMS group Germany undoubtedly contributed to the success of the project.
