Rapid and efficient sand casting of molds

voxeljet SERVICES produces sand cores and mold packages for casting directly from your CAD-dataset. Especially cast parts in small batch sizes are very popular. In the past, it used to be mainly automotive manufacturers and suppliers that required very small quantities of metal cast assemblies and components for testing and prototype manufacture. 3D printing was discovered as a superior technology for producing the required sand cores and molds.

Today, 3D printing is used in conventional applications and all other situations that require the rapid and efficient production of sand molds – whether for architecture, restorations, aviation and aerospace or the production of designer furniture.

InOrganic-Binding (IOB) sand molds

IOB sand molds are particularly environmentallyfriendly. No significant emissions occur during the manufacture and use in metal casting.

The casting behavior in metal casting is similar to that of conventional inorganic binders. The gas discharge in this system is very low. This allows for the production of cores that would lead to numerous casting defects with the use of organic binders. The de-coring behavior for aluminum casting can be described as good.

IOB sand molds are not only used for metal casting applications. The infiltration of IOB molds is also an option. Epoxy resins lead to high tensile strength values. The models change very little over time. They are also used as water-soluble molds or water-soluble cores. In this context, the focus is on reactive casting, concrete materials and laminate molds.

Plastic parts for investment casting and design models

voxeljet produces plastic models according to CAD data. The models are produced by applying a particle material in layers, which is bonded together with a binding agent. We use PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate; thermoplastic).

This innovative 3D printing technology provides complex parts with high quality surface finish and excellent dimensional accuracy. Using this organic material results in very low ash and zero pattern expansion, offering perfect burn-out characteristics, and is thus perfectly suited for investment casting, to give just one example. Others include, architecture art and product development.

VXC800HP: The continuous 3D printer

The VXC800HP is a continuous 3D printer. This innovation establishes a completely new generation of machines that allows the building and unpacking process steps to run simultaneously, without having to interrupt system operations.

This leap in technology has become possible thanks to a novel pending patent design featuring a horizontal belt conveyor that controls the layer building process. The layers are built at the entrance of the belt conveyor, while the unpacking takes place at the exit. The finished component can simply be removed from the rear end of the system once all of the material has been utilized.

There are virtually no restrictions with respect to the length of the molds. The width and height of the build space are 850 x 500 mm. The printed models offer a high degree of detail and excellent surface quality.
