As a pioneer of the comprehensive approach in moulding sand preparation Michenfelder developed more than 12 years ago the concept of the modular Moulding Sand Management System FoMaSys. The objective was – at that time as today – the reduction of moulding sand related casting scrap at the moulding machine to the most possible extent. Michenfelder achieves this by means of FoMaSys in an outstanding manner, with measurable results, directly at the moulding machine. From individual systems used separately so far in sand plants for moisture measurement and control, mechanical sand testing and process data monitoring an higher level networked system of interlinked and interacting modules, called FoMaSys, was created.

The incomparably high reproducibility of material output moisture within very close limits is possible only by continuous measurement inside the mixer. As only in the mixer all moulding sand components, like sand, additives and water are combined, it is possible only in the mixer to obtain a representative and precise determination of the moisture. The sand moisture is monitored without interruption right from the moment the material enters the mixer until it is emptied and is maintained automatically with a minimum of fluctuations on the desired level.

New ONLINE-SANDLAB with wide range of measured variables and, for the first time, process-integrated permeability testing

During the Moulding Material Conference (Formstofftage) at Duisburg, Germany, in February 2014, the prototype of the new ONLINE-SANDLAB with process-integrated permeability measurement was presented for the first time.

With this new ONLINE-SANDLAB Michenfelder (r)evolutionises the monitoring and control of moulding material parameters and complements the modular Moulding Sand Management System FoMaSys. In a compact automatic testing unit for conveyor belt installation there are several devices combined for the determination of a so far unequalled multitude of quality-relevant variables for sand preparation. For the first time, also permeability testing has been relocated away from the laboratory into the sand preparation process. This relocation allows action and reaction based on an enormously enlarged and directly at the moulding plant generated database in real time.

What can MiPro do for you?

The modular software-hardware combination MiPro is far more than just a database and visualisation. Of course, MiPro meets also these requirements and offers a complete QM batch documentation, but that is only a minor part of the MiPro capabilities. MiPro takes the sand preparation process into the office. By connecting the measuring and control subsystems distributed over the plant to MiPro, one can control and monitor the moulding sand quality from a single, central point. All important information from the moisture measuring and control systems arrives here and can also be utilised through MiPro in real time. All systems can be operated through MiPro in 1-to-1 visualisation, exactly as being present at the actual device in the plant. In addition, MiPro is also an important tool for statistical analysis, for alarm administration and follow-up of trends, a tool which will become indispensable very quickly. Planning or modernisation of a sand preparation plant involves more than just throughput per hour. In the planning phase, already, the course is set for subsequent control capabilities for moulding sand properties, which is unfortunately not always recognised. This knowledge is based on experience gained during more than 50 years with the installation of Michenfelder-designed control systems in sand reconditioning equipment of major manufacturers in foundries world-wide. There are very few in the industry who can rely on such a wide basis of experience with machinery and plant-specific - positive as well as negative - specialities and characteristics.
