Velemeter C

The Velemeter® C provides highly accurate speed and length measurements and all the advantages of non-contact laser based measuring equipment. The sensors are used in mass flow application as well as for elongation measurement.
As a supplementary sensor to the well established Velemeter® 500 series, the Velemeter® C is the more compact version but also makes use of the advantage of a He/Ne Laser tube.

The Velemeter® C is designed for use in or attached to C-frames of thickness gauges and has an integrated angle optic. The sensor head is mounted to the direction of movement of the material, usually at a standard stand-off distance of 450 mm. We can also provide every stand-off distance between 300 and 1500 mm to allow easy mounting at the mill construction.

Technical details

The digital signal converter box (DAB) has to be mounted in a cubicle by the user. As basic information we supply a pulse output. The pulse frequency is equal the Doppler frequency and can be supplied with 2 or 4 channels according to the RS422 standard. This output is compatible to mechanical encoders.

Based on this, it is possible to do an upgrade from mechanical encoders to non-contact sensors and still use the same mill control system.

Velemeter® Series 500

Additionally to the well established Velemeter 500 series a new compact sensor is available. This model is called Velemeter C - it is designed for use in or attached to C-frames of thickness gauges. It has already an integrated angle optic.

Nowadays, it is possible to control the mill gauge in a way that variations in the thickness of the material at the entry side are eliminated in the mill by using the material speed and the measured thickness for mass flow control. However, the new drive technology and the possibilities of gauge control are also responsible for the need of new techniques for speed measurement. The old existing mechanical detectors are no longer state-of-the-art.

The main applications for mass flow control are in the aluminium and stainless steel industry. For the speed measuring device itself, it makes no difference. In all applications VELEMETER® 500 is used.

The gauge head is typically integrated in the extractor hood at the entry and exit side where also the thickness gauges are installed. In some applications, the gauge head is equipped with an angle optic, so that it is possible to mount the gauge head at the same c-frame as the thickness gauge.

Since nearly all new rolling mills nowadays have built-in lasers, the users of old mills know that it is absolutely essential to re-equip their old mills with new measuring and control technology.

Technical details

For cooling purposes the gauge head is equipped with a liquid-cooled housing which can be supplied from existing cooling facilities or with an own temperature control device or chiller. The VELEMETER® 500 is also able to use the emulsion which is used at the mill for cooling. It is also essential that the laser is able to see the material under all rolling conditions. Therefore, an air purging device which is directly mounted at the laser gauge is used.

As the mass flow control itself is typically supplied by the contractors for the electri-cal part of the mill, it is necessary to con-nect the VELEMETER Model 500 to a host computer. For this reason, the system has a standard pulse output with a resolution of 10 µm.

iLux LightTrolley

The iLux LightTrolley is specially developed for visual surface inspection of heavy plate.
The LightTrolley has a sturdy structure and easy handling which allows the inspector to move it over the heavy plate easily.
The LED-stripes of the iLux LightTrolley generate a grazing light which highlights the topography of the surface to be inspectedand makes it easy to see any defects, similar to the principle function of the iLux LightBar.
The inspector can walk over the heavy plate and check the illuminated area for surface-defects without any additional affort.
The iLux LightTrolley has a rechargeable battery which allows his using up to 8 hours without recharging or replacement.

iLux Work roll inspection

Work rolls have a very important role in the rolling process as they need to have a special finish (roughness) that will be applied onto the surface of the strip.
Up until now it has been assumed that the fine structure has been finished after machining. Defects such as shatter marks only become visible on the strip, after the rolling process, during inspection in the laboratory.
By using the roll inspection monitor, this additional step can be eliminated as the defects can now be seen on the surface of the roll directly. In the case of a defect being detected the machining can be continued. Otherwise the roll is ready for use.

The figure on the right shows a sample configuration for the inspection of working rolls up to 850 mm in length. The monitor can be adjusted infinitely to roll diameters ranging from 40 to 140 mm. The system can be adapted to suit other dimensions on request.
To visualize the defects, a laser device illuminates a roll section of 70 mm length that will be projected onto a white screen where the operator can see the surface defects in a larger scale. The operator rotates the roll and adjusts the lever, comprising the laser module, by hand to inspect the complete surface.

Imperfections are immediately detected by the operator allowing a quick and reliable detection of defects such as shatter marks, and others.
This helps the operator to decide whether they have machined as much as necessary to remove defects or if additional machining is needed. Often, over-generous machining has been applied to ensure the removal of all defects. With the iLux work roll inspection system, the amount of machining can now be defined exactly, thus potentially extending the lifetime of the work rolls.

iLux LightBar

The iLux LightBar generates directed light which shines across the material with a shallow angle. Small topographic faults (such as sink marks, bulges, pits) are immediately visible through the formation of contour edges (light - dark).

Depending on the application, it can be used on production lines as well as sites where stationary checking takes place.

The system has a width of 1500 mm. Several systems can be installed abreast.

iLux vertical

The iLux vertical generates directed light and aids vertical examination. The system can be used in a stationary position for surface examination (e.g. hollow doors ) or on production lines (e.g. strip inspection in the metal industry).

iLux LightBox

The iLux LightBox serve for the inspection of industrial surfaces. The systems consist of a light source, a reflector, a light sail and a dimming system.

By means of double deflection, iLux lighting systems creates indirect light. The patented light sails direct the light almost parallel to the surface to be examined. So defects obtain a well-recognized structure and are clearly visible to an inspector. By the double deflection the light intensity is reduced. The eye is adapted dark.

The employee carrying out the inspection is not forced to scan the surface with his eyes point by point. He directly reacts by „light signals“, send out by the defects. The surface defects can be detected faster.

iLux maxi

The iLux maxi is mainly used in the field of strip production in the metal industry. The system is fastened across the strip and as such, acts as an aid to horizontal surface examination.

Alternativly, the iLux maxi is usefully employed in the field of lighting discharge ramps on stamping press lines. Through the even lighting, the aim is to carry out the clear and rapid examination of faults.
