The additive manufacturing site belonging to Deutsche Bahn in Neumünster is one of the first in the world to receive certification in accordance with the new standard ISO/ASTM 52920:2023 by TÜV Nord.
The new standard ISO/ASTM 52920:2023 “Requirements for industrial additive manufacturing processes and production sites” was issued on 29 June and sets a new standard of quality for industrial manufacturing using 3D printing. Certification by TÜV NORD was based on E DIN EN ISO/ASTM 52920:2021-08, which has now been integrated into the new standard.
Additive manufacturing allows DB maintenance in Neumünster to take quick and flexible action for the entire vehicle fleet in case spare parts are needed. Parts that are difficult to procure can be produced and installed in only a short time.
In general, such a certification is interesting for external 3D printing providers in many sectors of industry. “Certification according to ISO/ASTM 52920:2023 provides a decisive advantage for competition. Certified manufacturers can use it to document their successful transformation from a craft shop environment producing individual prototype parts to industrial-scale manufacture that is able to compete anywhere in the world”, says Jens Groffmann, Project Manager for Additive Manufacturing at TÜV NORD.
