At CWIEME Berlin, ArcelorMittal will present the latest innovations in electrical steels for automotive and industrial applications. The market for electric vehicles has grown significantly, thanks in part to the European Green Deal's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. ArcelorMittal expects electric vehicles to account for a quarter of all new car sales in the EU. The rapid shift to electric mobility means that significant investment in new charging infrastructure and new electric vehicle models will be required.
Crucial support from electric steels
ArcelorMittal sees its iCARe® range of electrical steels as crucial support for automakers to manage this transition and is therefore tripling its electrical steel production capacity.
In 2024, a new production unit will come on stream at Mardyck in northern France, tripling ArcelorMittal's electric steel production capacity with five new production lines. The facility, which will complement the existing electric steel plant in Saint-Chély-d'Apcher, will make ArcelorMittal the only European steelmaker with two electric steel finishing lines and two upstream rolling mills.
Supporting the Group's automotive customers in converting their fleets to electric mobility will be the Group's global research and development teams. One of the successful collaborations to promote e-mobility is the partnership with Toyota.
Versatile products
Increasingly, ArcelorMittal is investing in developing new electrical steels and improving existing grades for the renewable energy sector. The products will be used in motors, transformers, and generators for renewable energy technologies such as wind power to meet the growing demand for wind energy. ArcelorMittal is working with most of the leading suppliers of transformers for wind turbines.
