In bringing the Norton Xtrimium dual worm wheel to market, Wesseling-based company Saint-Gobain Abrasives is providing a highly efficient combination that encompasses a ceramic grinding zone and a synthetic resin fine grain polishing zone. According to the company, the advantage is that two machining steps can be completed within a single clamping process.
In Xtrimium, Norton has created a technical platform for bespoke worm wheel set-ups – for example, for generating gear grinding, gear profile grinding and bevel gear grinding. This takes the specific customer application, the machine requirements and the requisite process reliability into consideration. The abrasive grain, bond, structure and hardness of the grinding tool are fine-tuned for the machining process at hand. On the production line at the German Saint-Gobain Abrasives plant in Gerolzhofen, each and every worm wheel is subjected to the most stringent quality controls to attain optimum geometry and balance. The aim is to ensure that they grind safely and reliably when subsequently used by their operator.
With a separate zone having been included, the dual worm wheel can both perform the actual grinding task and take care of the necessary polishing. This eliminates the need for set-up work and cuts production time while simultaneously improving quality, according to the manufacturer.
