The Iqony Fernwärme GmbH and Trimet Aluminium SE companies in Essen have concluded a cooperation agreement concerning the use of waste heat from aluminium production. Starting at the beginning of 2025, the Trimet aluminium mill intends to supply Iqony’s district heating network with around 31,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year for the following 20 years. The cooperation of the two companies will further improve the carbon footprint of district heat generation in Essen, Bottrop and Gelsenkirchen.
The conversion of the Trimet aluminium mill in order to make its waste heat usable in production will cost six million euros. Iqony Fernwärme GmbH is additionally investing approximately two million euros to expand piping. A total of around 700 metres of branch line is required to reach the Bergeborbeck connection in the vicinity of the stadium at Hafenstrasse. The new length of pipeline will mainly be constructed at the aluminium mill premises.
