Good news for users of copper materials: according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), global copper reserves have risen from 870 to 1,000 million tonnes. The Copper Association has summarised the latest figures in a factsheet.

With around 1.8 million people in employment and a gross value added of 216 billion, companies in the copper value chain represent a key economic factor in Germany, as the Copper Association emphasises. The automotive sector and mechanical engineering in particular rely on this material in their products. Copper is also considered indispensable for the expansion of renewable energies. There is now good news for all users of copper materials: according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), global copper reserves have risen from 870 to 1,000 million tonnes.
Overall, known copper deposits – and thus copper reserves – have steadily increased over the years. It is expected that this trend will continue in the future. According to USGS data, on average there have been 40 years’ worth of copper reserves and over 200 years’ worth of copper resources available since 1950. These include reserves, discovered and potentially profitable deposits, and undiscovered deposits predicted on the basis of preliminary geological surveys. According to the USGS, these copper resources currently total 5,600 million tonnes. Factsheet available for download at www.kupfer.de.
