To realise this vision, the company has launched its most ambitious investment programme to date and secured a syndicated loan of around 300 million euros. This funding supports the company’s strategic focus on environmentally friendly solutions in iron casting.

Fritz Winter is committed to innovation and seeks competitive advantages beyond energy and labour costs – factors where Germany faces global competition. Instead, the focus is on energy efficiency, recycling and technical excellence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company carried out a thorough review of its industrial strategy, moving beyond the conventional ‘anything is possible’ mindset towards self-driven innovation.

A prime example of this approach is the ecoCasting process, introduced in 2014. This process replaces the conventional sand casting method for automotive and light commercial vehicle engines with fully integrated core packages and will later be extended to lorry engine blocks. Supported by advanced casting frames, this process enables thinner-walled cast components, functional integration, weight reduction and a significant reduction in water and sand consumption, including complete sand recycling. The introduction of a new ecoCasting plant is planned for 2025.

Decarbonisation and climate neutrality by 2045 – investment in two new electric crucible furnaces

With the vision of becoming the world’s best foundry, Fritz Winter prioritises holistic, long-term solutions over short-term approaches. Since 2013, the company has been complying with the requirements of the emissions trading scheme, thereby laying the foundations for its comprehensive decarbonisation strategies.

A key focus is on heat recovery to manage the high thermal energy demand in the production halls, despite the continuous generation of heat from melting processes. To develop an optimal concept for future smelting operations, the company launched a ‘concept competition’ and invited experts to submit innovative solutions.

The selected concept envisages two state-of-the-art electric crucible furnaces with a total melting capacity of 30 tonnes, which are now in operation at the plant known as the ‘Cathedral’. This facility reduces CO₂ emissions by 43,000 tonnes and decreases reliance on fossil fuels such as coke. Furthermore, it ensures the sustainable sourcing of recycled materials, particularly in response to the changing dynamics of raw material supply in steel production.
