As early as 2019, a report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warned that global sand consumption was growing at an unsustainable rate. Uncontrolled extraction threatens ecosystems and biodiversity, highlighting the urgent need for resource-efficient and circular solutions. This is precisely where Resand’s® sand regeneration technology and its ‘Sand As A Service’ (SAAS) business model come into play – with the potential to fundamentally transform the global sand value chain.

Structural challenges in the sand supply chain

Today’s sand supply chain largely follows a linear, single-use model: sand is extracted, transported over long distances, used once and then often disposed of or reused after only minimal processing. This model increases costs, heightens dependence on complex supply chains and places a significant burden on the environment.

At the same time, sand suppliers and users are facing growing challenges. High-quality sand is becoming increasingly scarce, prices are rising, and dependence on imports is growing. Logistics also present a major bottleneck: sand is heavy and bulky, meaning that transport accounts for a significant proportion of the total costs and compromises security of supply. Added to this are rising regulatory requirements for the extraction of primary sand, as well as growing pressure from customers to deliver solutions that promote the circular economy and reduce emissions. Furthermore, quality and supply reliability pose a challenge, as the properties of sand vary greatly depending on its origin, making it difficult to ensure consistent quality in end products such as concrete or castings.

A market in transition

Resource scarcity, rising costs and increasing sustainability requirements are forcing many industries to rethink their approach. With Resand® technology and the ‘Sand-as-a-Service’ model, Resand offers a new approach: sand can be reused multiple times. Recycling takes place locally, eliminating the need for primary sand extraction and long transport routes.
