In two years’ time, the successful quartet of technology trade fairs – GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST – will be back on the programme in Düsseldorf. From 25 to 29 June 2019, exhibition halls 3 to 5 and 9 to 17 will be dedicated to the themes of foundry technology, metallurgy, thermal processing technology and cast products. GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST are independent trade fairs, each with its own distinct focus and target markets. Only together do they paint the complete picture of the ‘Bright World of Metals’. GIFA’s range of exhibits covers the entire market for foundry machinery and equipment, die-casting machines and smelting operations. METEC, which will be held for the tenth time in 2019, is characterised by the presence of major plant manufacturers. In particular, suppliers of plant for the production of pig iron, steel and non-ferrous metals, for the casting and shaping of steel, as well as rolling mills and steelworks, are represented here. At THERMPROCESS, industrial furnaces, industrial heat treatment and thermal processes form the core of the exhibition programme, whilst at the 5th NEWCAST, the focus is on the presentation of cast products.

The quartet of trade fairs is rounded off by a comprehensive programme of specialist side events and conferences, tailored to the needs of the entire sector and bringing together theory and practice in an ideal way. For example, the “World Foundrymen Organisation” (www.thewfo.com) will once again be holding the WFO Technical Forum – the international industry gathering for process technology – at GIFA. The ‘ ’ GIFA event – a special exhibition organised by the Federal Association of the German Foundry Industry (BDG) (www.bdguss.de) – is also firmly on the agenda.

A key cornerstone of METEC 2019 is the ESTAD – the “European Steel Technology and Application Days” (www.metec-estad2019.com) – organised by the VDEh Steel Institute in cooperation with Messe Düsseldorf. The five-day ESTAD gets underway on 24 June, the day before METEC. Alongside the major theme of Industry 4.0, the event will focus in particular on the latest technologies for steel and iron production, surface treatment, additive manufacturing technologies, as well as energy and environmental aspects. Another key component of METEC is the European Metallurgical Conference (EMC) – organised by the Society of German Metallurgists and Miners (
) (GDMB (www.emc.gdmb.de) is organising for the 10th time at the upcoming METEC – from 23 to 26 June 2019. Demand for European metallurgical and foundry technology is particularly high in the Asian region.

Theory and practice also go hand in hand at the two THERMPROCESS events – the ‘ ’ FOGI special exhibition organised by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Industrieofenbau e. V. within the VDMA, and the ‘ ’ THERMPROCESS Symposium organised by VDMA Metallurgy. NEWCAST, which takes place for the fifth time in 2019, also offers professionals from around the world two key platforms for knowledge transfer and networking: The NEWCAST FORUM organised by the Association of German Foundry Engineers (Verein Deutscher Giessereifachleute e.V./VDG) (www.vdg.de) and the NEWCAST Award. Ever since NEWCAST’s debut in 2003, the award has been presented to industry players for outstanding achievements in the field of cast products.

The quartet of trade fairs was in top form at its most recent edition two years ago: 78,000 visitors from more than 120 countries travelled to Düsseldorf from 16 to 20 June 2015 to attend GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST, to experience what the 2,214 exhibitors had to offer. The atmosphere in the exhibition halls was outstanding: trade visitors were extremely impressed by the presentation of complete plants and machinery and placed numerous orders. The international character of the trade fairs increased significantly once again, standing at 56 per cent among visitors and 51 per cent among exhibitors.

These four trade fairs – along with wire and Tube, as well as their international offshoots – are in the capable hands of Portfolio Director Friedrich-Georg Kehrer and his trade fair team. In total, the “Metals and Flow Technologies” portfolio comprises around 30 events organised by the Messe Düsseldorf Group worldwide. At the Düsseldorf venue, these include – in addition to the quartet of GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST – wire and Tube (16–20 April 2018), the VALVE WORLD EXPO with Pump Summit (27 to 29 November 2018) and the International Thermprocess Summit ITPS (27 to 28 June 2017). “Messe Düsseldorf’s global focus has led, over the past year, to the organisational consolidation of all events organised by Messe Düsseldorf worldwide, including the flagship trade fairs in Düsseldorf. All 30 trade fairs are now part of a single portfolio; this enables us to make greater use of the synergy effects and the team’s expertise,” explains Kehrer.
